Some clients’ stories may illustrate Saturn’s transits and cycles and what these eras represent in our lives. Debra was 37 years old when she came to me feeling like her whole life was in chaos. She had recently moved out of her living arrangement because of conflicts with her roommate (a challenge to her authority). At the same time, dissatisfied with work that demanded little of her skills, she applied for several jobs that she was well-qualified for but she was not hired for any of them. She had just ended one relationship and entered into a new relationship. She came to me looking for the meaning in all these recent changes to her life and to try to regain a sense of “steering her own rudder” rather than feeling like a passenger on an out of control train.

Maureen was almost 27 years old when she came to me for a reading. Maureen had been raised to believe the wife’s ambitions were secondary to the husband’s and that her main duty was to her husband and children. She had married and become a mother very young and had a series of dead end jobs just to pay the bills The fact that after 7 years of marriage they still didn’t own their own home and her husband didn’t have any kind of life insurance gave her strong feelings of insecurity. And she was feeling increasingly frustrated with her unfulfilled ambitions for a meaningful career. Her need for increased security and freedom to pursue her personal career ambitions were causing incredible internal stress and conflict in her marriage.

What did Debra and Maureen have in common? Both were experiencing a major Saturn cycle in their lives. They didn’t need an astrologer to tell them they were at critical junctures in their lives. But they did need an astrologer to help them understand the energies they were dealing with and how to better navigate through them so they could fit into the person their soul was trying to become.

Saturn is the great teacher and Saturn transits are often experienced as periods where we’re being taught specific lessons about life. It's as if Saturn were whispering in your ear telling you what you now have to do in order to outgrow this present condition that is beginning to feel so confining and frustrating. What we usually experience is frustrations and limitations in our lives. We often see the problems as coming from outside ourselves. The outside frustrations and limitations are necessary in order to make us uncomfortable enough to make the changes that are needed.

There are several critical astrological cycles between the ages of 37 and 51. In addition, there are two key adult initiation cycles which occur at ages 28-30 and 58-60. These initiatory cycles precede and succeed the midlife cycles and provide a foundation you can use to explore your authentic self. Some of the most rewarding work I do as an astrologer is to help clients understand and navigate these significant life cycles.

In Debra’s case the failure to be hired at the jobs she was qualified for forced her to move in a new direction in her career. The new relationship challenged her to confront deeper relationship issues, ushering her into a personal journey into the spiritual realms. When I helped her understand the motivations and meaning behind the frustrations and limitations she was experiencing, Debra was able to take charge of her life and feel confident in the new directions her life was taking. She took comfort in knowing these frustrations had a bigger purpose and also became reacquainted with her inner voice of authority.

In Maureen’s case understanding the “bigger picture” of her Saturn cycles gave her the courage to listen to her ambition for a meaningful career and led her to take a job where she could use her secretarial skills as she was trained in a managerial position. This gave her immeasurable self-confidence and feelings of accomplishment. At the same time she and her husband bought their first home and life insurance policies to insure security for their growing family. This was a huge turning point in Maureen’s life. Maureen learned how to tap into her inner authority and became personally responsible for the direction of her life rather than blaming others for her dissatisfaction and failures. The lessons she learned here would serve as a major foundation for the next 30 years of her life.
